STURGEON BAY, September 21, 2010 – A revamping of the Sturgeon Bay Harbor and ship canal unveiled yesterday promises to improve the well-established shipping and shipbuilding industries in the New North.

The repairs were completed as part of $2.9 million in federal funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and included the installation of steel sheet piling and an anchor wall, stone fill, and a safety railing, among other improvements.

“The New North’s ideal location along the western shores of Lake Michigan has helped a strong shipbuilding industry develop,” said Jerry Murphy, Executive Director of the New North, Inc. “These improvements to the canal infrastructure will not only help regional manufacturers better ship their goods around the world, but also help the shipbuilding industry continue to grow.”

The Northeast Wisconsin Educational Resource Alliance (NEW ERA), a consortium that seeks to provide timely educational resources to communities, businesses, and government in the New North, has targeted shipbuilding as one of its industry clusters.

NEW ERA has been working with shipbuilders throughout Northeast Wisconsin to better understand the needs of the industry in terms of workforce training, and providing the resources necessary.

New North, Inc. is a regional collaboration effort focused on promoting regional cooperation and economic development in an 18-county region in Northeast Wisconsin. The 18 counties included in the New North are Outagamie, Winnebago, Calumet, Waupaca, Brown, Shawano, Oconto, Marinette, Door, Kewaunee, Sheboygan, Manitowoc, Fond du Lac, Green Lake, Marquette, Florence, Menominee, and Waushara.
