MADISON, WISCONSIN (SEPTEMBER 13, 2010): The Building Trades Council of South Central Wisconsin (“Building Trades”) and Hammes Company (“Hammes”) announce the creation of a Community Development Program that will be implemented as part of the Edgewater Hotel Redevelopment.

On Monday, September 13th, the Building Trades Council of South Central Wisconsin will enter into a formal agreement with the Hammes Company for the creation of a Community Development Program involving the Edgewater redevelopment. This is a monumental accomplishment whereby labor, a private business interest and government have worked together to set a course to accomplish important community objectives and benefit through a unique partnership.

The Community Development Program involves a series of structured initiatives geared toward four primary community interests, including: (i) job creation and retention; (ii) workforce training & education; (iii) sustainable development & design principals; and, (iv) historic preservation. This program also includes a Project Labor Agreement (“PLA”) which is one of the first PLA’s on a private project in this region’s history. The Building and Construction Trades Council of South Central Wisconsin and Hammes Company have both committed substantial resources to fund these important initiatives.

Today, these initiatives are the culmination of more than a year’s work with the Building Trades Council of South Central Wisconsin, the Hammes Co. and the City of Madison to structure a program that will redefine how major economic development projects evolve in the Madison area. The Edgewater redevelopment is an ideal project to initiate this type of program in our community and could become a model for how business, labor and government can work together in the future.

A media event is scheduled for Monday, September 13, 2010 at 3:30 p.m. at the Edgewater (666 Wisconsin Avenue) for the signing of the Community Development Agreement and a presentation by several community leaders including Mayor Dave Cieslewicz.
