Madison, Wis., –The sluggish economy has been forcing many resorts, hotels and motels to re-evaluate their entire operations for cost reductions, just as today’s consumers are increasingly looking for more environmentally-friendly properties. Now a Madison-based business, The Ozone Company, is helping many hospitality venues to not only save money but also become more “green” in the process.

The Ozone Company is the producer of EcoWash™ Premier Ozone Laundry Systems and Ozone Pool Systems. Its EcoWash™ system was recently rated by two independent labs as the best ozone laundry program currently in the marketplace.

According to Andrew Rupnow, president of The Ozone Company,” Our EcoWash™ commercial ozone laundry system has become increasingly popular because it does not require hot water, providing significant utility savings. It reduces chemical and detergent use by 15 percent or more. And it reduces overall water consumption, often by as much as 35 percent.”

According to Scott Carlson, chief engineer for Christmas Mountain Village in Wisconsin Dells, “It made great business sense for our property to install The Ozone Company’s EcoWash™ Ozone Laundry and Ozone Pool Systems. Combined, these systems cost approximately $27,000 and what we anticipate saving on laundry costs alone will pay for both systems within 14 months. Plus, we really liked that the Ozone Pool System will cut our chlorine use by 66 percent, providing a healthier and safer swimming experience for our guests.”

Jamal Masoud, general manager for the Radison Hotel in Madison, echoes Carlson’s comments. “We installed the EcoWash™ system approximately two years ago, and I’m proud of that decision everyday. Since the installation, we have saved over 18,000 therms, which equates to just over $13,500 in natural gas savings. We also saved nearly half a million gallons of water, several gallons of chemicals and just about 4,000 kilowatts of electricity. Our laundry operations are far more efficient and the new equipment paid for itself in 10 months.”

The North Central Group, which owns and operates 29 facilities throughout the Midwest, Arizona and Nebraska, has also contracted with The Ozone Company to install the EcoWash™ system into its properties. To date, two of the 29 facilities have received the new equipment.

“”With the potential energy and water savings associated with using Ozone technology in laundry operations, the process is worth considering,” says Dave Coe, facilities and purchasing manager for North Central Group.

Ozone, commonly known as O3, is simply three atoms of oxygen linked together (O2 +O1 = O3). This simple but powerful molecule is naturally used by the earth to clean the atmosphere. Ozone is chemical-free, non-combustible and converts back into pure oxygen shortly after use. In the EcoWash™ commercial ozone laundry system, an oxygen concentrator is used, which converts air into 90% pure oxygen. The ozone generator then separates oxygen atoms using an electrical arc and reassembles them into groups of three – this is ozone. The ozone is made soluble by a custom designed submersible venturi called the “Rupnozzle” and when it is injected into the water in the washing drum, it immediately begins attacking soils and bacteria. This method also allows for a constant concentration of ozone throughout each step and wash cycle helping it to more effectively clean stains and soils and kill bacteria more quickly than hot water or other harsh chemicals, such as chlorine bleach.

The EcoWash™ system also has dual layered disinfection protection, so any and all linen is sanitized throughout the entire wash process.

Rupnow adds, “The EcoWash™ system provides not only hard cost savings, but additional advantages, such as reduced wash and dry time, superior disinfection and extended textile life and quality. It saves our customers money and reduces the usage of natural resources through the use of ozone technology.”

The company’s Ozone Pool uses the same purification process utilized to purify drinking water. It is 150 percent stronger and over 3,000 times faster acting than chlorine, and since ozone is an oxygen-based oxidizer, the only by-product is oxygen.
