Financial Planning Association of Southern Wisconsin: Financial Planning Week to feature free workshops

AUGUST, 2010 (MILWAUKEE, WI) – The Financial Planning Association of Southern Wisconsin (FPA-SW) is presenting several free workshops at Bryant and Stratton College, 10950 W. Potter Road, Wauwatosa (near I-94 and Highway 100). The event will take place on Saturday, October 9 and will run from 10 a.m. to noon.

This will cap off ‘Financial Planning Week®,’ which is a national event and runs October 4-October 10, 2010. It is targeted to bring together those who provide, support and benefit from professional financial planning. This will also serve to achieve the goal of building public awareness of the financial planning process, which enables individuals to make prudent financial decisions to achieve their life goals and dreams.

Governor Jim Doyle, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker have all recognized the importance of the FPA-SW’s efforts in Milwaukee and throughout Wisconsin and have signed proclamations dubbing the week “Financial Planning Week” as well.

“This is a perfect opportunity for people to get information, education and unbiased advice,” Liz Pollock, MBA, CFP®, explained. “These days people are really stressed over money, they’re feeling overwhelmed and they’re not sure what they should be doing to protect themselves.”

Beginning at 10 a.m., three workshops will offer participants information and guidance on the following topics:

· “Reviewing Your Credit Report,” Laura Wilcox, CFP®, MS Wilcox Financial Advisors, s.c. – how to get your free annual credit reports, what to look for as you review them, and how to correct any mistakes that you find

· “Taming the High Cost of College,” Brad Baldridge, CFP®, Baldridge College Solutions – researching and finding college funding as well as strategic planning for your own college savings plans

· “Financial Strategies & Insurance Options During Transition,” Liz Pollock, MBA CFP®, Affordable Health and More LLC – covers how job change doesn’t have to derail your retirement, and offers options to maintain your healthcare coverage

Each workshop will be offered concurrently, will allow time for questions and answers, and should take approximately one hour. Afterward, registrants will be able to meet one-on-one with a planner for a free consultation, and accommodations for additional planners to meet demand will be made. These consultations can be on any financial topic; a reservation for a free consultation can be made by the participants during the on-line registration process.

“To have the services of a financial planner available at no cost is really the opportunity of a lifetime,” Pollock added. “Many middle-income families are struggling and do not have the money to hire a CFP practitioner, so I would encourage those families to register for a class and free consultation. We want to help them start planning, with unbiased information that can help with their financial decision making.”
