Pewaukee, Wis. – For most people, Social Security is a simple equation. They work. They pay in. They retire. They collect benefits.

In truth, Social Security offers many opportunities for retired workers to supplement their income further. A well-planned strategy can increase the benefit levels that recipients get from the longstanding federal program.

An April 28 seminar, “Savvy Social Security Planning,” will examine strategies to boost Social Security income under the program’s benefit guidelines. The seminar will examine how payments are calculated and the effect of other income on benefits. The event is at 7:30 a.m. at the Jannsen Center, W239-N3490 Pewaukee Road (southeast corner of Capitol Drive and Highway 164).

“Most workers pay into Social Security all their lives and plan to collect benefits immediately upon retiring,” said Terry Jannsen, CPA and President of Jannsen & Company, S.C., who will lead the seminar. “However, for those willing to consider alternative strategies, Social Security offers many opportunities to build a greater benefit down the road while still collecting income to maintain their lifestyle.”

For example, few probably know that any spouse – even divorced spouses – can collect 50 percent of the benefit on their spouse’s record. By collecting just this benefit upon retirement, and delaying collection of their full personal benefit for a few years, retirees can realize a significant gain in their final benefit levels.

The April 28 seminar is free, but attendees are asked to donate $10 to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Reservations are requested, and can be made by calling Darlene at (262) 513-9292.
