– The Historic Astor Hotel will be hosting Historic Milwaukee, Inc. (HMI) for its first all day intensive course for volunteers on giving student tours. Aimed specifically at fulfilling the state standards and learning targets of 3rd and 4th graders our student tours provide an important tool for teachers to teach local cultural history, civic government, geography and art. This tour fills a vacuum in the teachers curricula since there are no standard textbooks currently available with this information.

“The demand for these tours has exceeded our capacity, we have 25 volunteer guides who work on our student tours and they are passionate and dedicated but there are simply more tours than they can handle. We need more volunteers in order to meet the needs of teachers.” Laurel Turner, Program Director of HMI.

During the course potential volunteer guides will learn not only about the student tour but also about engaging a young audience. Teacher educator Linda Tiezza Walderra was a part of the Making of Milwaukee Curricula team will be working with volunteers using some of the same techniques she uses in her teacher training.

The program will take place on April 10th beginning at 10:00 am and going until 4:30 pm with an hour for lunch. Along with presentations from experienced HMI Student tour guides and Linda Tiezza Walderra participants will get the chance to actually take the student tour.
This program is free and open to the public
and student tour guide trainees who give at least 3 student tours this summer will receive a 25% discount on HMI’s 8 week intensive Walking Tour Guide Training Program which last year included speakers like John Gurda, Milwaukee Historian and Annemarie Sawkins Ph.D., Associate Curator of the Haggerty Museum.

Volunteers must have daytime availability during the week and enjoy working with children!
Consider becoming a volunteer student tour guide, our tours create an infrastructure for young people to experience Milwaukee’s history and built environment. Through our student tours we give children from an early age a new tool for understanding their surroundings as well as the language to participate in their own community structure.
