Encourages People to Use E-filing Option for Free, Secure Filing and a Fast Refund

The Department of Revenue (DOR) announces that individuals can begin electronically submitting their Wisconsin’s individual income tax returns starting today. E-filing is easy, has many benefits and is available online at http://www.revenue.wi.gov.

“Wisconsin’s electronic filing is free, offers maximum security and you may get your refund in a matter of days,” says Revenue Secretary Roger Ervin. “Wisconsin e-file helps make filing tax returns as simple as possible and the online tools help reduce errors in preparing your return.”

Wisconsin e-file is available 24/7 so people can file any time – day or night. The software services at http://www.revenue.wi.gov:

* Offer Wisconsin fill-in tax forms that perform the math to help prevent errors in preparing the return

* Are secure and taxpayer information is protected

* Send a confirmation once a return is electronically submitted

* Allow individuals to link to e-filing options for their federal income taxes by clicking on “web-based filing”

Individuals can get their refund quickly – people may receive their refund in their bank account within days when they use direct deposit. People can also use direct withdrawal if they need to pay taxes – simply electronically file now and pay the tax due on the date chosen.

Taxpayers can seek assistance with e-filing at more than 200 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) sites across the state. VITA and TCE offer tax preparation services to citizens for whom paid tax preparation may be out of reach. DOR, in partnership with other organizations, supports several VITA and TCE sites. Call 211 to find a VITA or TCE location in your area.

DOR will provide taxpayer assistance at several public library branches listed below during the upcoming individual income tax filing season. Department staff will be available to answer questions about state income tax returns and homestead credit claims, but returns will not be prepared. No appointment is necessary.
