Wisconsin Academy: Examining the future of cities at a new Academy Evenings presentation in Wausau with Joel Rogers

Contact: Jason A. Smith, communications director

MADISON–Cities are home to most of the world’s economy, half its population, and three quarters of its carbon dioxide emissions. Their density of people and economic activity, as well as their higher levels of public goods and popular organization, make them the likely answer to the question, How will we live in the future? But does urban living really foster more progressive politics and better social inclusion? As part of the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters’ Academy Evenings series of public discussions, distinguished sociologist Joel Rogers will address these questions and share his vision for the “high road”—the high-wage, low-waste, democratically accountable—economy of tomorrow. Join us on Thursday, October 22, from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm at Dudley Tower, 500 1st Street in Wausau, for “Cities Are the Answer: Taking the High Road in Wisconsin” with Joel Rogers. This Academy Evenings presentation is free and open to the public.

Joel Rogers is professor of law, political science, public affairs, and sociology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He directs COWS, the Center on Wisconsin Strategy. Rogers has published widely on American politics and democratic theory, advised many local, state, and national governments, and founded or co-founded many social justice initiatives, including the recent Emerald Cities. A MacArthur Foundation “genius” prize-winner, he has been identified by Newsweek as one of the 100 living Americans most likely to shape U.S. politics and culture in the 21st century.

Statewide Academy Evenings are sponsored by the Pleasant T. Rowland Foundation, Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, University of Wisconsin-Madison, M&I Bank, the Evjue Foundation, and the Lubar Family Foundation.
