BROOKFIELD – How the nation’s second-largest research university works with one of Wisconsin’s largest companies on moving ideas from the lab to the marketplace is the topic of the March 12 meeting of the Wisconsin Innovation Network’s Milwaukee-area chapter.

This free luncheon will be held at the Brookfield Suites Hotel and Convention Center, 1200 S. Moorland Road, just off I-94 in Brookfield. Registration and networking begins at 11:30 a.m., lunch at noon and the presentation at 12:30 p.m. You must register in advance to attend: http://www.wisconsintechnologycouncil.com

The panelists are:

* Mike Wood, who leads GE Healthcare’s university research collaborations for the magnetic resonance business.

* Carl Gulbrandsen, managing director of the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, which is the UW-Madison’s private, non-profit patenting and licensing affiliate.

* Dr. Charles Mistretta, a professor of biomedical engineering, medical physics and radiology at the UW-Madison and a pioneer in magnetic resonance technology.

The panelists will highlight existing and emerging areas of collaboration and offer suggestions on how other industries could better access university-based research and development.

“As part of our continuing ‘Wisconsin Edge’ series, we’re highlighting those very real examples where university-based R&D is leading to industry collaborations – and direct economic benefit for Wisconsin and its workers,” said Tom Still, president of the Tech Council and WIN.

The Tech Council recently released a report on “The Economic Value of Academic Research and Development in Wisconsin,” which charted $1.1 billion in economic activity in that sector.

The luncheon is sponsored by UW-Madison and the Wisconsin Alumni Association’s “UW for You” program. WIN is the membership subsidiary of the Wisconsin Technology Council, the science and tech policy advisers to the governor and the Legislature.
