Hiring Follows Departure of Executive Director J. Mikel Ellcessor to WDET

Milwaukee, Wisconsin (November 24, 2008) – Non-commercial 88Nine RadioMilwaukee (88.9 FM and http://www.radiomilwaukee.org) announced the start of a search for a general manager to replace the station’s top exec, J. Mikel Ellcessor, who was recently hired as GM of WDET 101.9FM Detroit Public Radio.

RadioMilwaukee has tapped public media recruiter Livingston Associates to conduct a national search for its GM that will run through Feb. 13. The Search Committee for Radio For Milwaukee, the non-profit that operates the station, will be headed by Board Chair Eric Resch.

“Radio For Milwaukee’s intense commitment to the city remains, and the organization is very interested in local candidates with significant and effective not-for-profit management experience and a proven track record in fundraising,” Resch said.

Interested parties should contact Livingston Associates at tom@livingstonassociates.net.

Ellcessor, who takes the helm at WDET starting Dec. 15, has been heading the station since 2006 and led RadioMilwaukee’s successful February 2007 launch. The station broadcasts a unique mix of diverse music, including urban and alternative rock. It includes Milwaukee music on its playlist, features short-form community voices discussing city culture and issues and promotes local civic involvement.

In the less than two years since RadioMilwaukee’s launch, the station has been named “Best Radio Station” twice by readers of Milwaukee’s Shepherd-Express weekly, “Radio Station of the Year” by the Wisconsin Area Music Industry and “Best New Radio Station” of 2008 by Milwaukee Magazine.

Milwaukee Magazine wrote that the station “may be the most integrated music station in town, and it seems to mix every kind of music, from arcane white rock to hip-hop, R&B and punk. Its segues aren’t always pretty, but the station is non-commercial, plays lots of music (including a weekly in-studio interview and concert by local bands), and its high energy approach reaches out to the community and involves listeners.”
