Research Symposium ‘Hear Our Voices’ to Focus on Cutting Edge Research in Audition and Spoken Language Development for the Deaf

WHO: The Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, founded in 1890, is the only national organization dedicated to supporting children and adults who are deaf or hard of hearing that use spoken language and hearing technology to communicate.

WHAT: The research symposium, entitled “Hear Our Voices,” is funded by a grant from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), one of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Moderated by Dr. P. Ashley Wackym, chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology and Communication Sciences at the Medical College of Wisconsin, the following speakers will be presenting research on new mechanisms in auditory discrimination and speech in deafness.

WHY: Each year, 12,000 children are identified with hearing loss at birth. Even more acquire hearing loss at a young age. Due to universal newborn hearing screening mandates and advancements in hearing technologies, many of these children have the opportunity to learn to listen and talk.
