DFI to Help Sponsor First-Ever Tribal Uniform Commercial Code Workshop

Provides forum to discuss UCC benefits and options


 


(Madison) The State of Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions is joining with Godfrey and Kahn, S.C. and the Wisconsin Indian Business Alliance to offer the first-ever tribal UCC workshop.  The three entities will host the event at the Mole Lake Casino, Lodge and Conference Center in Crandon on June 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  Registration begins at 9:30 a.m.


 


The meeting will focus on using the Uniform Commercial Code to increase economic development opportunities for tribal nations.  It will show how to compete in today’s markets, identify the roadblocks and solutions to securing business transactions in Indian Country in Wisconsin, explain the importance of commercial laws to borrowers and discuss why lenders must have the ability to secure loan transactions. 


 


John Collins, DFI deputy secretary, Chris Green, general counsel, Cheryll Olson-Collins, division administrator, corporate and consumer services and Ray Allen, deputy administrator, corporate and consumer services will discuss DFI’s role as a filing office and the Memorandum of Understanding with the State of Wisconsin.    


 


Brian Pierson, Indian nations law attorney and Jennifer Herzog, secured transactions attorney, both of Godfrey and Kahn, S.C. will discuss



  • What is the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC)?

  • Why is it necessary?

  • Model Tribal Secured Transaction Act [National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws (NCCUSL)]

  • UCC – Article 9 in conjunction with the Wisconsin Consumer Act

  • Other options. 

 


Tribal leaders and council members, tribal judges, tribal attorneys, entrepreneurs and commercial lenders all will benefit from the event.   There is no fee to attend.
